The purpose of this safety alert is to:
- Inform people about the danger of igniting flammable liquids by static electricity
- Provide guidance on how to control static electricity when filling containers with flammable liquid at service stations
At a service station in Sydney recently, a car and bowser caught fire when the car owner was holding a can while filling it with petrol. The person was not injured, but the car and bowser were destroyed.
The fire was caused by the discharge of static electricity that ignited the vapours from the petrol because the can was not earthed.

Background On 15 October 2009, Queensland's Electrical Safety Office issued a safety alert in response to a fatality and a serious injury in Brisbane associated with the installation of ceiling insulation. The safety alert highlighted the serious risks of foil insulation coming into contact with electricity and the need to manage these and other risks associated with installing ceiling insulation. On 1 November 2009 the Electrical Safety (Installation of Ceiling Insulation) Notice 2009 took effect which mandates new electrical safety measures for Queensland insulation installers. Fact Sheet Workplace Health and Safety Queensland and the Electrical Safety Office have developed a fact sheet to assist insulation installers to identify and control a number of risks associated with installing ceiling insulation. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland’s Spin those wheels is a campaign encouraging Queenslanders to participate in National ‘Ride to Work Day’ (October 14). WHSQ is encouraging budding riders to take up the extra challenge to continue riding up to and during Safe Work Australia Week (25 – 31 October).

Asbestos Carpet Underlay Alert
In the 1950's to the early 1970's hessions bags were used to transport asbestos. These hession bags were later used as carpet underlay with the asbestos considered "friable". The safety alert below is provided by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.
